Janis was born in Southern California, grew up in Northwestern Colorado, lived in South Texas, but has called Central Oklahoma home for most of her adult life.
For 15 years she worked in local television in the Oklahoma City and Corpus Christi markets. After writing for seven years, during which time she left television and completed seven novels, Janis made her first book sale in September 1990.
Within two-and-a-half years of making that first sale, Janis sold 22 novels, both contemporary and historical romances. In 2000, the release of her 28th and 29th novels, The Price of Honor and A Child on the Way, paved the way for her 30th — and many more titles — to be scheduled for 2001 and beyond!
Janis's books have appeared on the romance bestseller lists of Waldenbooks, B. Dalton Bookseller, and Bookrak. Her books have been nominated for numerous awards and have earned a total of six major book awards, including the National Readers' Choice Award, Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award, and the Colorado Romance Writers’ Award of Excellence.
In addition she is a three-time finalist for the Romance Writers of America’s coveted RITA Award, the "Oscar" of romance publishing.
What little time she does not spend writing and researching her next book Janis spends volunteering her time to various writers’ organizations. Having completed six years on the Romance Writers of America's Board of Directors, including a two-year term ending in October 1996 as President and CEO, Janis just recently retired as RWA's web master.
Janis actively promotes her own work by holding signings and by speaking at various writers’ and readers' workshops and conferences across the country.
She believes strongly in reading not just for knowledge, but for pleasure. And, of course, she believes in happy endings. That's why she writes romance novels.
