For years I thought no one was interested in my life story...but here you are! LOL And so it begins... I was born a *few* years ago in a small farming community in New Brunswick, Canada. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone else and what they had for breakfast...where you sometimes wish you had a little more anonymity but also the kind of place where, in a crisis, you know you're never alone. From my earliest recollection I was what you'd term a "nerd" I suppose...always with my nose in a book, worried about report cards, and enjoying creative writing. On summer holidays I'd dig out the Worldbook "Childcraft" books and do reports. I'm also competitive- which meant as a student I pulled high marks, studied until the wee hours, and played in the band and all sports. Second best was never an option. That trait is alternately a curse and a blessing. After high school I got my B.A. with a Major in English and a minor in Psychology. I ended up working for the provincial government in the Treasury department of all places. Why they put someone who'd nearly flunked math in charge of millions of dollars daily I'll never understand, but admittedly it WAS a great job, and I surprised myself by being good at it (at least I think). Less than a year after I got married, we moved to Alberta, and a little more than a year after that had our first child. Together we decided I'd be a stay at home mom, and another daughter followed. And here's where the story of Donna Alward, Author, really begins... After a pretty serious case of post partum depression, I was left fragile and wondering where exactly my life was going. I was just getting back on my feet when 9/11 happened - a whole other level of trauma. October of 2001 I was home, whining a bit about being "unbalanced" - still suffering some lingering effects of PPD - and my sister said, "Write a book. Just get off your ass and do it." I did. I came back home, penned "A Sister's Destiny" and promptly had it rejected. Deservedly. It's total crap. What did happen though is that I embarked on a wild, wonderful journey. A Calling. An addiction. Once I completed one manuscript, I finished another. And another. And several more. And finally, over four years after starting that very first chapter, I sold my seventh - or is it eighth - novel, "The Girl Most Likely" to Samhain Publishing. Finally that tenacity - that never settling for second best - came in handy. I'd be damned if I'd put in all this work only to fail. The only option was to keep going - persevering, learning, adapting - until I succeeded. Life is full of beginnings. When I wrote those first words back in November of 2001, it was a beginning. And this sale is just another beginning....
