I was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the middle child between an older sister and a younger brother. Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to be an artist and a writer. You could make me perfectly happy by giving me paper and crayons; you wouldn’t hear from me all day along! And I was lucky enough to be born into a family of readers. My parents were both avid readers. My mother not only taught my sister and me to read before we went to kindergarten, she read to us every day. I’m convinced that it was this early exposure to the printed word that made me want to write the kind of stories I like to read.
I wasn’t lucky enough to have children, but I have three beautiful nieces and a handsome nephew, and ready access to the children of my friends, especially my goddaughter NeAsia Symone. Children are one of the best things in life as far as I’m concerned, even though I only have to love them and spoil them and not do the hard stuff like cleaning up after them and disciplining them. This is why all my couples will end up with a family. Preferably a big one, since I adore and envy great big families; left to my own devices I’d have had at least six children.
I have a wide variety of interests, reading and writing, of course; but I’m also into drawing, painting, sewing and jewelry making, too. I adore both cats and dogs but I don’t have any pets, which is probably why there’s one in every book. I also love to cook and I collect cookbooks, although many of them are the diabetic variety these days since I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Writing is my chief passion, and I feel extremely blessed and privileged to be a published writer. I have many more books planned and I intend to keep writing for a long, long time.
There have been a lot of people from whom I’ve received support and encouragement along the way; I’ll never be able to thank them enough for being there for me. They include Janice Sims, Bette Ford, Beverly Jenkins, Wayne Jordan, Debbie Renee Sims, Chandra Taylor, Gwendolyn Osborne, Leslie Cannon, Sabrina Demps, Virgie Wilson and as always, Jamil Ali.
Saying thank-you doesn’t really describe the gratitude I feel. And thank you, too, to all the great writers who have inspired me, including Rochelle Alers, Francis Ray, Brenda Jackson, Leslie Esdaile, Pearl Cleage, Timm McCann, E. Lynn Harris and all the BET/Arabesque writers who came before me.
