I am searching for a romance book published most likely in the 1980s. I cannot remember the character's names, title or author, but I vividly remember the cover. It was a stormy background with the heroine running toward the observer. She had long black hair and wore a yellow dress with a white shawl.
The plot was something like this: the heroine worked as a governess for a wealthy New England family (it may have been Boston). The husband brought home a business associate (they were in shipping of some sort) who fell in love with the governess immediately. I cannot remember the exact situation surrounding the marriage, but the governess and ship captain were married rather quickly and set off for his family estate on a rugged island (possibly off New England). His mother was a little "off," and our heroine was miserable on the island because she felt the hero was not in love with her, etc. She made a few friends, but discovered an old flame of the hero's and this kept them apart. There was a pregnancy.
I remember a few other small things... the white shawl pictured on the cover was a gift from the hero to heroine. The captain's name may have been Nicholas or Nathaniel. There were two children in the family where the heroine was the governess, a boy and a girl.
Any help would be appreciated, since my mother is interested in finding this book for my grandmother. She read it around the same time my mother and I did, and would like to see it again.
