Reviewer Comments: The clues are bringing them closer and closer to the murderer. But will Sophia and Nicholas survive the killer’s need to keep his deed a secret?

Nicholas Bourne, Earl of Stonecliffe, has been in love with Sophia since they were young but he knows she is inaccessible to him as she is to marry his brother, Langdon. Nicholas, as he cannot have Sophia, becomes the drunken fool of the group to the point where he misses his friend’s wedding. He realizes that he needs to work with a clear head and will help Sophia find her mother’s murderer.

Sophia Afton is betrothed to Langdon but it is Nicholas who fills her thoughts. Sophia and Nicholas form a type of team to find her mother’s murderer and do come up with several clues which they follow. The clues lead to people who know something but once they have made contact the person dies or disappears and this frustrates Sophia. Sophia is willing to risk her reputation to find her mother’s murderer. Spending all the time with Nicholas, she is also ready to give up Langdon to be with Nicholas.

The clues lead Nicholas and Sophia to many unsavoury places including Bedlam where they meet someone who was there the night Sophia’s mother was murdered. Unfortunately she has has few lucid moments but does provide some valuable information. When they return she is dead so Nicholas and Sophia know that they are close. They do find who they are looking for but I won’t spoil the outcome of this part of the story for readers.

The secondary characters provide an interesting side to the main characters. Singh, Nicholas’s man, turns up from India and proceeds to make Nicholas’s life comfortable. Singh is certainly a character who is memorable as he tries to organise Nicholas according to his status among the ton. His attempts are quite amusing. Then there is Mouse. He is a young boy who knows many things and is able to give them clues and find the evidence to assist in this murder enquiry.

I enjoyed the continuation of this story as the friends have hunted for the murderer of Sophia’s mother. The need had been passed from the fathers to the children. As a reader you don’t need to read all the books but once you have read any of the books you probably won’t be able to resist going back to the beginning.

With Langdon losing Sophia, I really hope he gets his HEA and we get to read it!
