Elena Michaels was a carefree college student. Then she fell in love. She and Clayton seem to have everything in common, but he has left out one small detail. He is a werewolf. He brings her to the pack and asks the leader for permission to marry her. When the alpha werewolf refuses, Clayton bites Elena.
Such a bite transforms the one bitten into a werewolf, but it's such a difficult transformation that females never get through it and they die. For some reason, however, Elena, with the help of the pack, does make it through the change and becomes the only female werewolf in existence. She feels torn between the human world and the world of the pack and eventually opts to return to human life.
She denies her werewolf side, finds an apartment, settles on a career and finds a live-in boyfriend she thinks she is in love with. Every few weeks, however, the call of the wolf becomes too strong, and she must go to the ravine outside Toronto, where she lives, to undergo the change and go for a long run as a wolf.
She is sure she has done the right thing and swears never to return to the pack. Then she receives a call from the pack leader. They need her help. She makes excuses and returns, vowing only to stay long enough to help the pack in their fight against a band of renegade werewolves who are a threat to both werewolves and humans.
Once back in the pack, she finds she can't resist her lover Clayton. They make love, but she is still determined to return to human life. She is sure the pack is the wrong choice for her.
She joins in the war against the renegades which results in the loss of several of the pack and severe injury to others, including Clayton and the pack leader, the two groups finally come to terms. Clayton and Elena also come to terms and Elena knows she can never break entirely with the pack or Clayton, because she loves them both.
