Los Angeles is now Crimson City. Its inhabitants are a mix of humans, vampires, werewolves, and the occasional Demon that is summoned by a human from beyond the veil between the two worlds. The streets are filled with violence and danger. War is about to break out between the various species.
The hero of "Through a Crimson Veil,"Conor McCabe, is half human and half Kiverian Demon, one of the stronger breeds. He is a killer of vampires and werewolves and Demons if he gets the chance. He hates Demons because he believes a Demon raped his mother. He has spent his life on this side of the veil.
Mika is also half Demon, but she is of the weaker type. Her mother is a Demon and Mika has spent time on both sides of the veil. Because she's a half blood, she is able to pass through the veil with no problem. She has been sent by the Demon council to steal an incantation that's in McCabe's possession. Then the plan is for assassins to kill McCabe. The incantation is said to lower the veil and let the Demons into Crimson City. They plan on taking it over.
However, when Mika sees a picture of McCabe, she believes him to be her vishtau, her one true mate. When she does finally meet him, she knows this is true. The sexual attraction between them is almost overpowering, although McCabe, having little knowledge of Demon lore, knows nothing of this vishtau.
Mika knows she must do everything in her power to keep her vishtau alive. Unfortunately, she also has no choice but to find the incantation and give it to the council. She has given her word, and a Demon never goes back on his or her word. She has to come up with a way to accomplish what she promised and still keep McCabe alive.
McCabe finally gives into the attraction and they make love. Later a spy tells him the real reason Mika is there. Of course, he's furious.
Their love is strong enough to overcome their differences, and together they work out a plan whereby they can do as she has promised and escape McCabe's death. This is accomplished with the help of McCabe's Demon father whom he has sworn to kill.
