My love affair with Brenda Joyce continues with The Masquerade, another wonderful historical romance from this talented author.

Part of the de Warenne Dynasty family series, The Masquerade introduces us to a somewhat chubby young girl named Elizabeth Anne Fitzgerald. Eclipsed by her two other sisters in beauty and prospects, she reads books and tries to avoid the limelight, thinking she is unnoticeable. From a young age she falls head over hells in love with Tyrell de Warenne, a man well above her station. As she grows up, her infatuation grows and never wavers.

One evening at a Masquerade ball she finds herself cornered and propositioned by the dashing Tyrell. His invitation to meet him at midnight is a once in a lifetime change. Lizzie's sister Anne, however, insists she switch costumes with her and Lizzie returns home early, missing her rendezvous.

What happens next will have to be left for you to discover! I can say there is a child, a betrayal, and a lot of surprises along the way. Your heart will ache for Lizzie as she grows into a determined and strong woman who loves her family and is loyal and forgiving even when her greatest desire seems unattainable to her. The pages sizzle with sensuality from these two characters and it is a delight to have an imperfect heroine, who is chubby but absolutely irresistible to our hero. I can't recommend this book enough; it is a pure treat not to be missed.

Reviewer Comments:

Ms. Joyce is an outstanding author, one that manages to capture a readers attention from the very first page. "The Masquerade" is a read that will totally enthrall the reader with wonderful characters, and a heart breaking as well as heart warming storyline.

Lizzie Fitzgerald has loved Tyrell de Warenne for as long as she can remember. This dashing knight once saved her life as a child and that one meeting was enough to carve a space in this gentle girl's heart. Although part of the genteel population, Lizzie's family is not as well set as many and as a result the idea of Lizzie ever being able to marry her Tyrell is outside the realms of possibilities. Still Lizzie will hold on to her dream of her love for as long as she can. When she's invited to a masquerade ball at the estate of Adare she and her family attend having no idea that this will be the event that will change both Lizzie and Tyrell's life forever.

Two years later Tyrell still can't get over the feelings that he has for the plain but sweet Lizzie Fitzgerald. Imagine his surprise when she and her parents arrive on his doorstep with his son. According to her parents Lizzie is the mother and he is the father. How can that be? Still, Tyrell does what he must but the fact that he had a fiancee and she is just the person he needs to marry in order to assure the future for Adare means nothing once he tastes Lizzie's lips. Will he be able to set aside Lizzie and do right by his duty or will a love that can't be denied win all?

This was an engrossing tale. Ms. Joyce has vividly brought to life the de Warenne family and Tyrell has grown to become a remarkable man. Tryell and Lizzie's romance is truly romantic, as well as heart-breaking but they get their happy ever after! I can't wait for the next in this series and can only hope that it's not a long wait. Ms. Joyce writes amazing stories that are multi-layered and almost epic in nature. I hope that she remains true to her talent and continues this in the next "de Warenne" story.
