Katherine Fleming was devastated when the man she was about to marry informs her his wife is alive! The Scandal! In a private meeting (unbeknownst to Katherine) Cole divulges to his bastard brother, Dominic, that he has squandered the family fortune and Katherine's inheritance as well. He strikes a bargain with Dominic; Cole will deed him Lansing Square, a property Dominic has been obsessed with, if Dominic will marry Katherine and turn over her inheritance to him. Katherine has no choice but to go along with the arrangement, believing he will leave her immediately anyway.
Dominic and Katherine are both carrying some heavy emotional baggage, though neither will reveal anything about their respective pasts. For a time they exist with a physical relationship only, but when the secrets start to come out, all hell will break loose and test the tentative bonds formed between the couple.
Sexual chemistry abounds between Dominic and Katherine, with many steamy love scenes and intense emotional drama. A well drawn cast of characters runs the gamut from extremely likable to truly vile and devious. The friction between Dominic, Cole, their mother, and Sarah was palpable; with Cole and Sarah portrayed so well as to make my skin crawl. By contrast, Dominic's sister, Julia, and his friend, Adrian were both very personable and magnetic characters. The sense of time and place was richly drawn and transports the reader right into Regency-era England.
A fine story of two wounded souls finding trust and love through adversity make SCANDALOUS a highly recommended book.
