Twenty-something, vintage clothing store manager, Jesse, has landed a part in the Uptown Players rendition of Little Shop of Horrors. The Uptown Players are a way-off-Broadway group on a shoestring budget, and the “newbies”- Jesse to be precise- has been recruited by her best friend, Tracy, to help gorgeous Mick Fielding with the sets; a deck ape, as it were.
All is not smooth, though; Mick’s ex-girlfriend, Victoria is stalking him and making threats against anyone near him. As Mick and Jesse draw closer, “accidents” begin to happen; on stage and off. Suspecting Victoria, it is increasingly unclear how she is gaining access to secure areas. If it isn’t Victoria, who could it be? Will Mick and Jesse make a go of it or will the stalker put an end to Mick’s life?
An intense fatal attraction scenario; this reader was involved in the mystery throughout the book. Mick and Jesse are remarkable characters that felt like friends; they are both strong and independent with warm hearts. Victoria is a sociopath that was so profoundly written I was well able to “feel” the madness in her attraction to Jesse. I cheered, I laughed, I cried, and got angry when the relationship was put in jeopardy. The well developed secondary cast was an asset to the story; fleshing it out in a positive way. Having never read anything by this author, I was pleasantly surprised to add another author to my “watch” list. I am easily able to recommend PLAYING NICE to friends and family; it is an exciting book from beginning to end.
