for Always a Temptress
Date of Review: 04/13/12
This pair has nightmares in common. Not the reason for those nightmares but that they are unable to sleep because of their experiences. It is not until they join forces that the nightmares begin to subside.
Major Sir Harry Lidge is from a poor background. He had the temerity to dare to aspire to marry Kate, the daughter of a duke, when he was younger. Instead he found himself in the army with a commission bought by Kate’s father. He has returned from war a hero. He is a part of the Drake’s Rakes although their real aim is to find a killer. Harry suffers from nightmares which he tries to deal with by himself. He is still very protective towards Kate and marries her to stop her brother from placing her in the asylum again. As he learns more about Kate and her last marriage, he is determined to make a difference. But first he must protect her from a killer, someone who wants her dead for something she knows.
Lady Kate Seaton, nee Hilliard, is the Duchess of Murther. Kate’s outrageous behavior has the ton talking but it is the supposed portrait of Kate in a men’s club that spurs her brother into action. He wants to place Kate into an asylum but Harry is able to circumvent that by marrying Kate. Kate has suffered greatly at the hands of her now deceased duke husband and has the physical and psychological scars to show for her time with him. But as it turns out, the psychological scars came much earlier than this. Kate has used her intelligence to outmaneuver her enemies. Kate has also spent time with war widows and at an orphanage.
Kate tries to help Harry deal with his nightmares despite the fact that she also has nightmares and is afraid of the dark. She also has an eclectic collection of people around her and who have proven loyal on many occasions especially when it comes to protecting Kate and Harry. Kate has suffered the indignity of being in Bedlam but was rescued. She is also the catalyst for another lady of quality being rescued from the asylum, where she had been placed, when her husband no longer wanted her. It is the final secret her family knows that sends Kate into a spin and seals her fate. All she hopes is that Harry can find her in time.
This was a good story that had several twists and the reader might be kept guessing as the events reveal themselves. I certainly did not see one event coming and this makes the story even more suspenseful. I liked that both Kate and Harry had been mentally tortured, although in different ways, and that they were able to find the comfort they needed in each other however reluctant they might be, to find themselves married.
There were some threads that I felt were left unfinished including a thread about one of the cohort attempting to kill the Duke of Wellington. So this may be in the next book but as a reader unfinished threads are frustrating.
