Katherine Garbera is the award-winning, best-selling author of nine Silhouette Desire books. She is a Florida native who was recently transplanted to the Chicago area and is still adjusting to living in a place where there are real seasons. She is happily married to the man she met in Fantasyland and spends her days playing with their two children. Writing is the chief focus of her time after her family and the only thing she likes more than working on her own books is reading other authors. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and loves the opportunity to talk about writing with anyone who'll listen.
In 2002 Katherine released three new titles from Silhouette for their Desire line. In 2003, she will release four titles from Silhouette. She is often asked how she comes up with her ideas and the answer is simple..."I love playing what if," says Garbera. "No matter what the situation I let my imagination take flight and find a story I want to write."
Garbera started making up stories for her own benefit when she was on a competitive swim team in high school. Though she went to State and usually medaled at swim meets, Katherine says her heart wasn't in swimming but rather in the stories she created as she swam laps at practice. Though not overly athletic Katherine has practiced the martial art TaeKwon Do with her daughter and vows that there's not a piece of plywood out there that can take her in a fair match! She also enjoys bicycling with her kids and walking with her husband.
Being Italian is a huge influence on Katherine and on her writing. "Being part of a huge noisy family is so deeply ingrained in me that this theme resurfaces time and again in my writing," says Garbera. "I can't fathom being alone in the world." And her stories are always made up of a community of family similar to her own.
The oldest of three children Katherine grew up as a "Smith Girl" and is used to be lumped together with her sisters. With only 18 months between the girls they were each other's adversaries and playmates. "Today my sisters are my best-friends," says Garbera who once wished for wholly selfish reasons that she was an only child.
Friendship is another important theme in Katherine's writing and she says it reflects what she's come to know of life in her thirties. She's found friendship to be one of the most important influences in her life. "There is something safe about knowing you can let your guard down with a few special people and they'll accept you for who you are."
