When her career as a writer began, Martha admits, she did not sell her first book, or even her eighth. After seven years of perfecting her craft, "The Message", was published by Avalon in 1994. Since that time, Martha has written twenty-four books. Twenty one of these books have been Regency Romances for which she is so well known. Her other books include two historicals and one contemporary for Berkley.

Martha has just wrapped up her latest book, "The Rake's Fiancee", and has recently shipped it to Signet. Martha's books have been distributed and translated world wide, including German, Hebrew, Russian, Polish, Italian, Rumanian, and Indian. An exciting accomplishment, even is she can not recognize her own name in many of these languages.

What led Martha to writing Romances novels, namely Regencies? In an interview with Zebra, Martha quotes about the regency era "I have always loved the manners, the mode of speaking, and the costumes of that time."

Another interesting fact about Martha which shows her love of all things Regency....when judging manuscript contests she keeps notes of the manuscripts she has reviewed and keeps an eye out for them when they are published. So far, eighteen of the manuscripts she has judged have been published. Martha is always delighted when this happens.

Martha's advice for writers is to sit down and write. Don't expect every word or sentence you type to be a pearl. With practice, the more sellable your work will become, so go for it!

Martha was born in Wetumpka, Alabama, but at an early age, she and her family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she remains today with her husband and two daughters. Martha has been married to the same man for thirty years, and not surprisingly, her husband shares many of the same traits as the hero's she writes about.

When not busy writing, Martha practices her technique as a classical singer, is an advocate for literacy, and regularly donates her time as a tutor in her local school district. Martha is also active in several chapters of Romance Writers of America, contributing her time and expertise to help other romance authors. She is a 1977 alumni of Georgia State University and has taught English, drama and tennis at the high school level.

Some of Martha's favorite things in life are the ocean, dachshunds, all kinds of cats, and collecting any kind of ceramic bird. One of her favorite past times is sitting on her deck and watching birds in the woodland situated behind her house.
